This spotlight exhibition showcases a dramatic sculpture of St Cyril bought by the Museum in 1962 with the help of the MGC/V&A Purchase Fund.
Cyril was Archbishop of Alexandria from AD 412-444, when it was one of the greatest cities in the Roman Empire. It was also a time of conflict within the Christian church. Cyril was a leading thinker and argued bitterly with Nestorius, Archbishop of Constantinople over Christian doctrine.
The unknown sculptor has turned their battle of ideas into a vicious brawl. Cyril has his foot on Nestorius, who bites his finger at his rival, a gesture of frustration and anger still known today.
The statue was made of painted wood in about 1680 and was meant to be shown in a Catholic church. It is a fine example of Baroque art, full of movement and vibrant detail.
