Henrietta Maria 'The Queen behind the Black Legend' by Leanda De Lisle
Event Description
A history talk on Henrietta Maria, one of British history's most reviled queens.
Leicester Guildhall presents a talk with renowned author Leanda De Lisle, on the anniversary of the 'Siege of Leicester' 1645
Henrietta Maria is one of British history’s most reviled queens. Damned in her lifetime as ‘that Popish brat of France’ she is remembered as frivolous and fanatical, the wife who ‘turned Charles I Catholic’ and paved the way to civil war. Today, Leanda de Lisle will look behind the black legend to reveal a remarkable woman of great wit and intelligence, a friend to many Puritans, she was respected even by her enemies, and as the royalists' She Generalissimo she proved herself to be a worthy daughter of France’s Henry the Great. She would survive the wars and eventually flourish as Britain's Phoenix Queen.
Tickets £4.50 per person. Advance booking recommended.
