Exploring life on Earth past, present and future

Critical Minerals Day

In preparation for Earth Day visit Leicester Museum & Art Gallery for a  chance to explore the Museums’ collection with our Geology and Palaeontology volunteers in partnership with the University of Leicester. Understand how life began on this planet 3.4 billion years ago with a talk from our student volunteers covering our first 4.5 billion years in the solar system. Explore how new technology is reliant on the resources within the planet today, where they come from how they might be used in the future.

Life on Earth Talk

12:30 - Refreshments Zone

Come on a journey through Life on Earth from the creation of the planet to the world we know today. A 60 minute talk.

4.54 billion years ago, dust and rock accumulated near the Sun, at the perfect distance to allow liquid water, producing a habitable planet. Fast forwards all these billions of years and we find flourishing life;  from the oceanic abyss to the rocky peaks of Earth. Here, we tell the story of how Earth came to be, and how life defied the odds to conquer this planet. We will discuss the turbulent origin of Earth, before telling the tale of how primitive organisms arose, setting the scene for life to evolve complexity.

Join us as we traverse the old tale of Leicester and the Earth's timelines through millions and even billions of years. Meet past Leicester residents Ichthyosaurus, Cetiosaurs, Pterosaurs and much more. Explore the wonderful story of evolution, our story, inhabitants of Earth, a distant pebble floating within the Universe, for what else might be out there for us to uncover?

Free drop in event - no booking required.
