In The Footsteps Of Susannah Watts (1768 – 1842)

Historian and Blue Badge Guide Virginia Wright explores the lifetime and legacy of noted writer, artist and abolitionist Susannah Watts.

In 1804 she wrote and published the first ever guide book to Leicester, a town that she described as “large, commercial and we trust a respectable town.” The book ran to three editions but it was not until the third that she was named as author.

Susannah and her friend Elizabeth Heyrick, were both involved in the Abolition of Slavery movement. Susannah supported other good causes some of which were the provision of infant schools along with care for the elderly and infirm.
