Talk: A brief history of allotments in Leicester
Event Description
Digging, planting and dealing with the rabbits, a talk by Cynthia Brown
This illustrated talk will cover their origins in Leicester in the 1840s, to rescue working men from ‘the deadly fountain of poverty’, through to ‘back to the land’ movements in the later 19th century, competition in the form of horticultural shows and producing potatoes for the Infirmary, and their crucial role in digging for victory in both world wars. We will also consider the role of allotment societies, their social aspects, and some of the challenges they have faced – rabbits not the least among them.
