An exhibition showcasing the talents of asylum seekers and refugees
Leicester City of Sanctuary has been a local charity since 2007 and is part of the national City of Sanctuary network. Our wider VISION is that all people fleeing violence and persecution are provided with sanctuary and are given opportunities to thrive. Our particular MISSION is to welcome asylum seekers and refugees in and around Leicester, and support them to rebuild their lives, develop their skills and feel part of the community. We offer a range of activities and we run sessions to prepare our group members for life in the UK.
The City of Sanctuary runs creative activities, such as painting, drawing, collage, dressmaking, knitting and crochet. These activities offer the group members a chance to concentrate and forget their worries for a short while, this contributes greatly to their emotional wellbeing. As well as enable them to use their existing skills and discover talents they didn’t know they had.
The work displayed in this exhibition shows off these talents and we are proud to have the chance to share it at Leicester Museum & Art Gallery.
"Leicester City of Sanctuary is a charity which welcomes and supports people seeking asylum in the UK, as well as those who have been granted refugee status. We are proud to have our work showcased at Leicester Museums and Galleries, which is a museum of Sanctuary. Our volunteers and participants have worked so hard on the exhibits on display, and we are delighted to be able to share them more widely."
