Portrait of Prince Charles at his Investiture as Prince of Wales. Worked in silk on linen cloth, in long and short stitch, in a style similar to that used by Mary Linwood*. Mrs Stafford, full name Florence Winifred, was self-taught and described her work as 'painting by needle'. The portrait was begun in the early 1970s and took her several years to complete.
* Mary Linwood (1755–1845) was an internationally renowned artist who exhibited her worsted embroidery or crewel embroidery artworks in Leicester and London.
This piece was purchased after being displayed at the Costume Museum in Leicester (now Wyggestons House).
