Welcome to Leicester Museum & Art Gallery

A family friendly day out, the galleries include Ancient Egypt, Dinosaurs and the Leicester Stories Gallery. Please note that some parts of the museum are currently closed for a major redevelopment that will create a range of exciting new galleries showcasing Leicester's world class art and design collections (see visitor notice below for latest details). Formerly known as New Walk Museum.

The museum hosts a vast array of temporary exhibitions, featuring works from the collections and touring exhibitions from national museums. Plus a range of activities from entertaining talks, children’s handling sessions, lunchtime concerts, licensed for weddings, civil ceremonies and available for private hire.

Visit the gift shop to buy a range of exhibition merchandise and contemporary crafts, or pop by the Museum refreshment area to recharge with a drink, some food and free wifi.

Visitor Notice Gallery and Refreshment Area Closures:

As part of a major capital investment in Leicester Museum & Art Gallery, we are currently working to create a range of new galleries.

Due to ongoing refurbishment works, vending machines refreshments will no longer be available. As part of the refurbishment works the museum will have a new café created which will become available Spring 2026.
German Expressionism: The Total Artwork Gallery has now closed as part of the refurbishment work.
Wild Space, the Den and the ground floor art galleries including the Victorian Art, Arts and Crafts and Picasso Ceramics galleries are now closed.

During this development period, the museum’s other galleries, including our exciting programme of temporary exhibitions, will remain open to visitors.

From Monday 13th January 2025 and for the duration of our programme of works, our car park will no longer be accessible or available for parking cars or bicycles.

Blue badge holders can park for free on the On-Street parking within the locality.

'What an absolutely brilliant place this, there is an incredible range of exhibits from an outstanding dinosaur exhibition, through an impressive Egyptian one to the quite stunning display of Victorian art. I hadn't expected to spend anywhere near as long as I ended up spending here, but I was just drawn in by everything. Every display is so well curated, to inform and entertain and to keep your attention, each had so much to offer, there wasn't one that I walked away from with anything but appreciation for the thought that had gone into it.'
