Overview
Our museums' community engagement service organises a range of workshops to bring the museums experience to the people of Leicester. We're looking for volunteers to help enhance these workshops.
Volunteers will help:
- Set up the workshops.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Supervise handling objects.
- Taking part in craft activities.
- Help people with special needs.
This opportunity means you can get involved with exploring handling collections and museum exhibitions with community participants, both in community venues and at museum sites. Volunteers experience how to use these as inspiration for arts and crafts workshops. There is also an opportunity to develop expertise in working with a range of Leicester’s communities.
Workshops happen both in the week and at the weekend and the opportunity is flexible to suit the availability of the volunteers.
Main duties
Volunteers will help with practical aspects of workshops including unloading cars, setting up, helping participants throughout the workshop, clearing up (may include washing up paint palettes, wiping tables, etc.), loading materials into cars, supervising handling of non-accessioned handling objects and talking with participants about them.
Skills needed
Volunteers need to be a ‘people person’, with an ability to present a friendly face and talk easily with people from all communities and backgrounds. They need to be a practical, ‘hands-on’ person, ideally with experience of craft activities, but essentially with the ability to pick up new art and craft skills and techniques quickly and to offer practical help and support to participants. Volunteers must have a readiness to travel within the city to community venues for workshops.
Additional information
You need to be 16 or over to volunteer in this role.
