What is Unglamorous?
The Unglamorous movement in Leicester began when Ruth Miller started all-female band The Verinos. The reaction to The Verinos was so positive Ruth realised there was a demand for all-women bands. She started the Unglamorous Music project to give women with no experience of music the chance to try out instruments and experience the joy of being in a band.

In January 2022 Unglamorous started at local rehearsal rooms Stayfree with the aim to get on stage in 66 days. As a result, five brand new, punk-inspired all-female bands made their debut on stage. Inspired by these women another cohort took to the stage in January 2023 and a third in April of that year. To date 27 bands have fledged under the banner of Unglamorous Music.
'With self-belief and a few basic skills new musicians can create amazing original songs. A community of women musicians is a powerful thing’.
- Ruth Miller
The exhibition was on display at Leicester Museum & Art Gallery from 2nd November 2024 - 13th February 2025.
