Author Talk: Mummified, Angela Stienne
Event Description
What does it mean to display the dead in museums? And what does it say about the living?
What does it mean to display the dead in museums? And what does it say about the living?
Mummified is an insightful and thought-provoking exploration of the ethical, historical, and emotional journey of Egyptian mummies from Egypt to our local museums. Through captivating storytelling, Dr Angela Stienne unravels the complex narratives surrounding mummified bodies, questioning the ways in which they have been collected, displayed, and interpreted.
We have long forgotten to step back and ask ourselves why Egyptian mummies are in our museums, how we came to see them as museum objects, and what that says about us.
Blending historical research with contemporary voices, Mummified challenges us to reconsider our relationship with the dead—not as artifacts, but as people—and to reflect on the responsibility of museums in shaping this conversation.
Join author Dr Angela Stienne for a stimulating morning talk about Egyptian mummies in museums with special insights into the Egyptian mummified bodies in the care of Leicester Museum & Art gallery!
The event will be followed by an opportunity to meet the author. Dr Angela Stienne will be available to sign copies of her book in the Egyptian Gallery from 11am-1pm.
